Expert Tips For Working At A Summerley Event

If you’ve never worked a major event like the British Grand Prix, Victorious Festival, or Goodwood Revival, you might wonder what it’s really like. These gigs are incredibly fun, but being prepared is key! So, we went straight to the source and asked some of our most seasoned Team Summerley staff for their top tips. After all, who better to guide a newbie than our trusted crew?

#1 Tip : Wear comfortable shoes!

For many of our team members, wearing comfortable shoes is their top tip! You’ll be on your feet all day so we can’t emphasise enough that you need to wear the right shoes for the environment you’ll be in.

Sometimes you will be required to wear a particular colour or style as part of your uniform, but you can often wear anything, so choose wisely.

Sam would also recommend buying a stash of blister plasters, just in case. He covers miles and miles at events so they are an essential item for him!

Thanks to George, Emma and Anna for this advice!

Tip #2 : Turn up on time and in the right uniform

Experienced team member Tom’s best tip is to be punctual and look smart when you arrive at a shift, to make the best impression with clients. This will make you stand out from the crowd and ensure you’re booked for more shifts in the future.

It’s easy to check the Ubeya app to see what time you should report for a shift, and if a particular uniform is required.

Tip #3 : Be friendly and approachable

Working at big events means you’ll meet countless people, from colleagues and clients to the general public. James, Mia and Will have all worked at countless events and all have the same advice. Making a great impression starts with a warm smile, and a friendly attitude not only makes your day more enjoyable but also reflects positively on the entire team.

Mia says being friendly and approachable is her top tip. James also recommends building relationships, with others you’re working with as well as clients.

Will recommends enjoying the work you’re doing, and make the most of each shift.

One of the Summerley OGs is Alex, whose best tip is to listen to your managers and learn from them. They are there from experience gained and are always happy to teach you new skills to better your own experience. Also, smile and engage with customers as they are there to have fun – so have fun with them and smile!

Tip #4 : Hydration and snacks

Seasoned team member Anna advises taking food and drink for the whole day. Using a refillable water bottle means you won’t go thirsty, but make sure it’s full when you start your shift!

Oisin agrees that hydration is key, and is second only to having the right footwear!

George always has an emergency Pot Noodle to hand, when he’s working for Summerley. He says they’ve got him out of a pinch on more than one occasion!

Tip #5 : Getting through the tough times

Patric has been working for Summerley for more than 3 years and has some fantastic wisdom to share. He says that you’re not just serving drinks or taking orders – you’re crafting moments people remember. Even on tough nights, your attitude makes all the difference and sets the tone.

If the last table you served have been rude, or the kitchen is running behind, remember that each new guest is a fresh start. Take a deep breath before approaching them, as a tiny pause can keep your energy genuine and banish any bad vibes! Bring the warmth and don’t let stress steal your spark.

Tip #6 : Camping tips from Lydia and Marija

Prepare for cold weather because no matter how warm it is during the day, you will get chilly in the tent. It might also rain, and you don’t want to get wet going from the campsite to your shift, so pack a poncho. Marija says hers was a lifesaver at Victorious last year!

You can’t always rely on the shower facilities so it pays to invest in some wet wipes as they will get you out of a sticky situation – literally!

Bring games too! As you will often travel the day before an event, it’s a great way of getting to know people and making friends.

Other camping essentials include :

🔸A towel

🔸Power bank and cables

🔸Refillable water flask

🔸Earplugs and sleep mask (if you’re a light sleeper!)

🔸Bin liner, for rubbish as well as dirty clothes #LeaveNoTrace

Tip #7 : Getting home

Another tip from Anna is that even if you have a lift organised, make sure you have a backup plan just in case something goes wrong. Ensure your phone is fully charged in case you need it for an emergency Uber or to arrange another lift.

Tip #8 : Sam’s top tip!

Sam recommends checking the Ubeya app before every shift as you’ll find all you need to know there, to be fully prepared for each job. The information on Ubeya includes:

  • What uniform (if any) is required
  • Role
  • Shift times
  • Job location
  • Where to report to
Sam Hickman with a team of waiters and waitresses outside West Dean before an event there.

We hope these tips will set you up for success at your next Summerley shift.
