What types of roles does Summerley Recruitment recruit for?
We recruit for bartenders, waiting staff, baristas, catering assistants, kitchen porters and chefs.
We also recruit front of house team leaders, supervisors and managers, and also bar supervisors and managers (with and without personal license).
How do I apply for a hospitality job via Summerley Recruitment?
You can register online via our website, or apply on university job boards, or the Indeed or Reed websites. If you are a student then you can also chat in person and apply at one of the job fairs we attend.
What is the minimum age requirement to work for Summerley?
The minimum is age 16 although some clients require a minimum of 18 due to shift lengths and licensing requirements.
What kind of shifts are available (hours, days, evenings)?
There are a variety of shifts available, which cover all days and various shift timings. We use an app called Ubeya to offer shifts and on there you will see what is available in terms of days and hours, and you can choose the ones which fit around your schedule.
Where are the events you need people for?
We need staff across England, Wales and Scotland. Many roles are in East Sussex, West Sussex, Hampshire, Surrey, London, Berkshire, Bristol and the West Country. We also need staff in South Wales, Northamptonshire, the Midlands and Scotland.
How much notice do I need to give if I can’t do a shift I’ve been assigned?
We ideally need a minimum of 48 hours if your availability changes, but if you’re unable to work due to sickness then we need to know as soon as possible.
Will I be paid travel expenses or given transport to event locations?
We can offer support in organising travel if needed.
What is the hourly rate, and how often do I get paid?
The hourly rate varies from job to job but the minimum is £12.25 per hour. You will see the rate of pay for each booking on the Ubeya app. You will be paid weekly on a Friday for the previous week’s work, provided a timesheet has been submitted by the deadline. On some occasions, if it is a particularly busy event or we are waiting for a purchase order from the client, the payment may not be made until a week on Friday. If in doubt, get in touch with your contact in the Summerley team and they will be able to advise.
What uniform or dress code is required for event work?
The uniform requirements vary depending on client requirements. All uniform information is on the Ubeya app for each booking. However, in the majority of cases, we require a long sleeved plain black or white buttoned shirt with a collar, with black smart trousers (office/school style) with smart black closed toe shoes (office style).
What support or training does Summerley offer before I start working?
We have free, compulsory training online with industry-renowned platform Flow, in which you obtain certificates for Health & Safety Level 2, Food Safety Level 2, Food Allergens Level 2 and First Aid Level 2. In some circumstances you will also receive on-the-job training for specific events.
How far in advance will I know my assignments?
It can vary between six months for large-scale events to one day if you pick up a last minute shift for sickness cover. Usually, you will get 1-2 weeks notice for each assignment prior to an event.
What happens in case of bad weather or event cancellation?
As an agency we are flexible to our clients’ needs. This means their requirements can change at the last minute, therefore shifts can be shorter or longer than the original booking. If an event is cancelled on the day you will be paid for 4 hours.
Will Summerley Recruitment help with my tax, national insurance, or payroll queries?
On your payslip you will see your tax and NI deductions as well as your tax code. If there are any issues with this you can speak with our payroll department to ask any questions you may have.
Can I work for other agencies or directly with another employer while on Summerley’s books?
Yes, you can work for other agencies or another employer alongside Summerley, provided they are not for the same clients as Summerley. Something to bear in mind is that you will need to call HMRC to split your tax allowance between Summerley and any other employers you have to ensure you are not paying more tax than you need to.
How do I get feedback or report an issue after an event shift?
We regularly review events with our clients and will pass on any specific feedback to you. If you have feedback to pass to the client please let your contact at Summerley HQ know, and they will arrange to pass it on.
What experience do I need to work for Summerley?
You will need a minimum of one year’s experience for the role you are applying for. There can be cross-training involved if you wish to do other types of roles, should you prove yourself in your primary role.
For regular staff there is the opportunity for progression to supervisor and management roles.
I’m a self employed chef, can I get paid via my UTR (unique tax reference)?
Yes, for all freelance staff we can pay through your UTR number, or a limited company. However, we do not pay via umbrella companies.
